Poetry Is Not For Attention

This is not a poem, but has everything to do with poetry. In my school we're doing a poetry class, and all the really preppy girls write about how hard there life is and how suicidal they are. I think the is disgusting because everyone knows that their lives are dead simple and it's all fun. They have nothing to complain about. They do'nt suffer rejection and iscolation. If they really do suffer then they can write about that. But I really don't think breaking nails, and feeling depressed for a day, qualifies as suffering. It's a grab for attention... and if they really suffered I don't think they would want attention. When you feel depressed you want everyone to go away, and stay out of your way. Not everyone aw-ing over you, and feeling sorry for you. This is something that really bothered me, because they take away from one of the real essences of poetry, which is pain and real life experiences. I'm not saying it's all about the suffering, but these girls are strictly ruining poetry by writing like this, it's understandable if they wish to write about a happy experience, or even a sad experience, but make sure it happened, in either a close way, or some what distance! POETRY IS NOT FOR ATTENTION!

you know i agree with some of what you said here but i dont think its right to judge a life you dont live. how do you know if that perfection is a front to conceal a shattered existence at home. i knew a girl who was popular and preppy and all that junk who lived in a nice house and was molested by three relatives. you never know what is under the surface. sometimes poetry doesnt have to be real though. i have a poem on my site about a guy kidnapping a famous girl. i never did that. never thought about it. just thought it would be a cool stephen king type of thing. i think to some extent poetry is for attention. we wouldnt all post on our sites or on the bpc page if we didnt want people to see it and when someone comments it makes our day. but i get where youre coming from though. in high school i had this buddy who saw me doing poetry reads at coffee shops and stuff and saw how some people [girls especially] thought it was cool. so he proceeded to write the twenty or so most godawful poems on the planet. we poets are not stupid and neither are the readers. if its fake or forced everyone will know it. they may not say it but they'll all know.
all my love,
sage
p.s. loved what u said about some people's jacked type skills. it made me laugh.
